Top 6 Art Galleries in Los Gatos 2012/2013 Editor’s Choices

Los Gatos  –  A Community that Values Fine Art

You do not have to know the difference between a giclée and a lithograph to appreciate art. Art is simply meant to be enjoyed and enrich our lives. Collectors may focus on a certain artist or style of art. Less sophisticated art enthusiasts simply look at a piece of art and react. A rare Rembrandt or original Vincent van Gogh can sell for tens of millions of dollars. A nice painting by a local artist might only cost a few hundred dollars. If you like art a little or a lot, Los Gatos is a great art community to explore.

Los Gatos Museum Art Gallery

A good place to start your personal art walk is the Los Gatos Museum Art Gallery. Along with the History Museum of Los Gatos, the art museum/art gallery is a non-profit enterprise that is dedicated to advancing the cultural experience and appreciation of the area’s history and local art. Walk around the gallery and see the creative works of more than 50 artists. Many of the artists are from the Bay Area as well as from other parts of California and the rest of the country. Check out the oils, acrylics and water colors. In addition to the many different paintings, there are sculptures and a variety of mixed media creations on display. All of the art is also available for purchase. If you are inspired by a particular piece of art, buy it, and support the art community in Los Gatos.

Peabody Fine Art Gallery

Internationally recognized artists are represented at the Peabody Fine Art Gallery. The family run business, that has been serving the community for 20 years, offers the works of artists like Ted Geisel a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane fame, Tom Everhart and Markus Pierson. Also part of the Gallery is a custom framing shop where you can buy ornate frames for oil paintings or have an important print matted and preserved under archival quality glass. A visit to the gallery is a great way to see the latest creations by some great artists and also learn about art.

California View Fine Arts

Making a mark on the Los Gatos art community since opening in 2002, California View Fine Arts has established a reputation as an important gallery for Early California, American and contemporary paintings. A nice selection of artists representing the period from 1880 to 1950 is proudly displayed. There is also quite an extensive collection of art by today’s best contemporary artists. Make sure to visit this local establishment during your Los Gatos art walk.

Los Gatos Art Association

Every great art community needs an art association to help promote and encourage artists and patrons of the arts. The Los Gatos Art Association holds juried shows, provides opportunities for artists to network, and keeps everyone informed and up-to-date about the latest happenings in the art world.

Los Gatos Company

A really fun place to shop for artwork and handcrafted gifts is the Los Gatos Company. Located in the middle of town, art lovers can find all types of folk and fine art, furniture, giftware and handcrafted items.

Another really interesting place to find local art, unique jewelry, handcrafted items and whimsical gifts is Azuca. Whether you are looking for a big piece to hang in the living room or you just want a small item to remember your visit to Los Gatos, you will find it at Azuca. Prices start at less than $10. Buy someone you care about a gift or take something home for yourself.

Spending the day in Los Gatos exploring the art galleries and art shops is always great fun. You never know what you are going to find. Bring the whole family, maybe start with breakfast at Los Gatos Café, and then spend the day checking out the art scene.

    • Hi Charlotte, I have inherited from my family 2 pieces of art painted by a local artist of Los Gatos, named Thomas Marlatt. These pieces are huge and my home will not accomadate them. My question is, where can I get an appraisal or, do you know of a gallery that would take them on consignment.
      Thank you,
      Cynthia Hales
