Situated in the San Francisco Bay area, and named for its phenomenal views of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Mountain View, Calif., is home to some of Silicon Valley’s most successful high-tech companies such as Google, Intuit and Symantec. Even with the presence of such internationally-successful enterprises, the population of Mountain View is still a moderate 74,000, making it an ideal place to navigate and enjoy. It truly is a perfect hybrid of high tech and low-brow casual lifestyles.
Another draw that brings visitors from all over to Mountain View is the location itself, as well as the balmy climate. On the San Francisco Peninsula, it is directly on the old El Camino Real route and enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Average temperatures range from a low of 39 to a high of 79 degrees.
The town’s downtown area, near Castro Street, has a slew of shops, cafes, restaurants and more. At the very center of downtown is a plaza which houses the Mountain View Public Library, City Hall and the Mountain View Center for Performing Arts. For the last 40 years, the city has been host to the annual Mountain View Arts and Wine Festival (Castro St.), and every Sunday morning in the Caltrain parking lot there is a farmer’s market, showcasing the diverse produce grown in the region (after all, before Mountain View was the high-tech hub of California, it was one of the agricultural leaders in the states).
Visitors to Mountain View won’t want to miss the Computer History Museum, site of the most thorough collection of computing artifacts in the entire world; Moffet Field, a Federal Airfield that’s home to NASA Ames Research Center; Stevens Creek, which has a paved bike/pedestrian path and gorgeous views; Googleplex, the corporate headquarters of Google; and the Historic Adobe Building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
